Sufism
is known as the technique of the heart, the technique of the pure, the mystical path,
the inner, psycho-spiritual dimension
of Islam as a complete code of life or din, was perfected during the life
of the Holy Prophet MUHAMMAD (salla’Allahu alaihi wa sallam).
The method of dhikr employed by the Naqshbandiah is "Dhikr-al-Khafi-Qalbi"
(contemplation of Allah’s name within the heart) and is termed "Pas an
Fas", which in Persian means guarding every breath.
The Object of Sufi
Orders
Tariqa is the other name
of Sufi orders or Sufi brotherhoods. Sufi orders may be associated with
Sunni Islam or Shia Islam. This places the emphasis of Sufism on purity of
heart and soul. The Sufi orders
have graded programs in which initially every new seeker is educated in
Dhikr-al-Lisani (zikr with the tongue) and is finally taught the Dhikr
–al-Qalbi is practiced form the very beginning. In the
introduction to his book "The Sufis", Idries Shah writes that the
word Sufi has no known etymology.
